Friction in the Creative City

Abstract The Indonesian city of Bandung presents itself as an “emerging creative city.” This raises the question how “emerging” can attain realisation: when and where is accomplished? formalisation creates friction – to borrow term from Tsing. manifests in two ways. First, through its ontological opacity (what city?), Mould contrasts “Creative City” (the mainstream understanding term) with lowercase “creative city” more grounded, subversive term). Second, political contestation ( for whom city?) which Peck Theodore notion “fast policy,” dialogue “slow policy.” However, rather than being a dead end, this article argues that “friction” repoliticise by challenging depoliticisation occurred formalisation.
